Puppy Resources: Food
Puppy Dog Food (1st Choice)
Orijen Puppy Food is the best dry dog food you can buy. It has the highest content of high-quality fat and protein of any kibble on the market and the lowest amount of carbs. If raw feeding is not possible (which is the ultimate way to feed), this is a good alternative.
Puppy Dog Food (2nd Choice)
Acana is the second best puppy food kibble option and about 30% cheaper than Orijen. It is made by the same manufacturer.
Puppy Canned Wet Food
If you want to (or have to) mix your kibble with some canned wet food, this is a good option. Moist food is easier to digest for dogs, so this is often desireable.
Puppy Resources: Training Treats
Training Treats: Happy Howie’s
These are our favorite training treats. Most dogs LOVE them! They are moist, don’t crumble, easy to work with, cheaper than many other treats, made in the USA and of good quality. You have to cut them, but that is easy with a $20 chopper (see below).
OXO Good Grips Chopper
We use this cheap, great chopper to dice our Happy Howie’s rolls. This handy kitchen device will make dicing Happy Howie slices a breeze.
Training Treats: Pet Botanics
Another great option for training treats that most dogs love. We call these our “stinky treats” as they have a stronger smell than other and dogs LOVE that scent. They don’t smell bad at all. They just have a more pronounced scent.
Training Treats: Zuke’s
Another great option for training treats that most dogs love. These are a bit smaller than other treats which makes them a great choice for small breeds or young puppies.
Training Treats: Bil-Jac
Another great option for training treats that most dogs love. These are especially great if you are looking for treats that don’t crumble (matters for luring).
Puppy Resources: Supplements
Pet Probiotics
Probiotics are a great natural way to prevent and combat dog diarrhea, loose stool, yeast overgrowth, bad breath, constipation, itching & scratching, allergies, digestive issues, and gut related problems in pets.
Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth for Pets
Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is a completely natural way to prevent (and even treat) parasites in dogs. Making this a regular part of your dog’s diet will allow you to avoid deworming treatments, which are really not that healthy.
Puppy Resources: Accessories/Supplies
Pet Bowls for Food and Water
These are high-quality food and water bowls for your dog at a great price. With puppies 2QT bowls are great. Once your dog gets bigger, you may want to upgrade to 3QT or 4QT bowls.
Biothane Leash (6ft)
These are great leashes! Easy to clean and more bite resistant (not bite-proof) than nylon leashes. These are great for walking.
Nylon Leash (6ft)
While your puppy is young and teething, they will chew on anything that feels comfortable. Your dog will probably destroy a few leashes during puppy hood. These are basic, solid and very cheap leashes for these few months. We recommend you get 3 to 4)
Puppy Crate
Ideally your crate is large enough for your puppy to be able to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably in the beginning, but not larger than that. It will make housebreaking a lot easier. However, that means upgrading crates a few times. When we train your service dog from puppyhood, we can lend you the best size puppy crates for the first few months, so you don’t have to keep buying new crates as your puppy grows. That way, you can just get the correct size once your dog is potty trained.
Pet Exercise Pen
These are great to contain your puppy inside or outside and can easily be moved around. Ex-Pens make living with a puppy a lot easier when you can’t watch the little rascal.
Puppy Resources: Personal Care
Pet Shampoo
This is a great organic oatmeal shampoo. It is mild with aloe and essential oil (lavender). Also available in a hypoallergenic version.
Ear Wash
Our recommended ear wash. Regular ear washing prevents dirt buildup and nasty ear infections. This is especially important with dogs whose ears don’t stand up.
Dog Diapers
Sometimes you need them and these are great. They have different versions for male and female dogs and washable and disposable versions as well.
